These child labourers were forced to work in factories and workhouses at the insistence of their parents and workhouse guardians. The reputation of Elizabeth Barrett Browning as a poet of liberal social conscience is chiefly based on her widely known The Cry of the Children. It is less well known that after the publication of that poem in 1843 Barrett Browning continued to champion social progress in England, the liberation movement in Italy, and abolitionism in the United States. While The Cry of the Children was a kind of poetical echo of Chartism. It creates the impression as if the children and machines are interchangeable; the children become machines and the machines are more alive than the children. This impression of the unity of children workers and the machines, with which they work, is underlined through the poets use of plosives like t and p. The staccato-like rhythm of the poem, along with the repetitions of words like turn and all and the dashes (end-stopped poem) at the end of many lines create a sensation of the noise in a factory, which indicates too that it is by this rhythm that the children live and not only work. On a broader view one can also say that the verses also voice the sentiment and anxiety of the Victorian Age, as people felt that with the mec hanization of work, people also lost their ability for kindness and emphatic feelings for others and became themselves more heartless. The poem ends with the childrens angels speaking for them since no one else seems to do it, No one is exempt in the address of O cruel nation where Barrett Browning directly put forwards her distress and poetic vocation to criticize the Parliament. The poet opens up her anger by saying that, No one can point the finger at only one person or group of people, we all are to blame if today child labour is found in our nation, which we call Mother Earth so ironically if we neglect her children. Where are they now

   On my drive to work every day, I pass a large-scale construction project. Yesterday as I passed some of the equipment, I was struck by the similarity between building and writing. It doesn’t matter if you have all the supplies in the world—if you don’t have the correct tools, neither a building nor a paper will be created. I recently sat down with Megan House, a freelance journalist and editor of IEW’s Magnum Opus Magazine, who happens to be an IEW alum as well. Some of her comments reminded me of how IEW gives this â€Å"toolbox† to students. Tell me a little bit about yourself. My undergrad degree was in print journalism, and my MA was in theological studies. I direct a dance ministry in Lynchburg, Virginia—we have about two hundred kids involved in our program. I also work for IEW on the side and write for four different magazines. How old you were when you started IEW? I was introduced to IEW in 7th or 8th grade, starting with the Student Writing Intensive. We had tried a million different writing courses, so initially we were very hesitant to start IEW. I had always loved to write, but I often struggled with how to structure my thoughts on paper. I really feel like IEW helped me with that. It taught me how to condense and gave me a toolbox I could use to structure my papers. What IEW courses did you take? After the Student Writing Intensive, we did Bible Based-Writing Lessons and then SWI Continuation Course Level B. After I started college I watched the Advanced Communication Series, kind of for the fun of it. I think the Advanced Communication Series is great for freshmen in college or students preparing to go to college. What was your favorite part of IEW? What I love about the program in general is how entertaining and engaging Mr. Pudewa is. It was always very fun, and whenever something is fun you are going to be more interested. I learned a lot in the essay sections, and earlier on my favorite part was writing from pictures because I am a very creative person and love that type of writing. What type of writing do  you find yourself doing now? As a freelance journalist, most of my writing is articles. For example, I work for a business magazine and a few others where I write profiles on different businesses. My favorite writing is creative writing. I had a short novel published while I was in college, and I am working on a couple others right now. One of the things I have in the works is a children’s series. I’ve been teaching ballet for many years, and I’ve found that most of the children’s books about ballet have the message, â€Å"I’m the best! I’m a star!† whereas I like to instill in my dancers that it doesn’t matter if you are the best; as long as you try your hardest and are the best that you can be, you have accomplished something. For this series my grandmother is doing all the illustrations, so I’m excited to be working with her. I’m also working on another short novel. Do you see any connection between your IEW training and your ability to communicate beyond writing? Yes. During high school I really struggled with public speaking skills. You wouldn’t necessarily think that writing skills apply to speaking, but they really do. When I went to college and took public speaking classes, I found myself doing the keyword outline method and found it extremely helpful. What I had learned from IEW definitely transferred over. Really any class you take during college is going to require papers or presentations, and IEW trains you for those situations. When it comes to teaching writing, students normally fall on a spectrum between the child who simply refuses to write and the child who writes so much that they cannot seem to slow down and structure their ideas. Both of these issues can be addressed by supplying the student with effective techniques and models. As educators, it is easy to become frustrated with both a child who writes too much and a child who writes too little. But don’t worry. Once you give your students a set of tools for writing, you will be blown away by what they can accomplish, not just through composition, but also by speaking, thinking, and creating. Growing up in the Pudewa family, Christopher was exposed to the IEW method from a very young age. With Americans checking their phones 8 billion times a day (thanks for that stat, Time.com), most of us can agree that we dont leave home without them. Thats also true for students. Only a few short years ago, many schools banned cell phones, but many schools, especially private schools, have changed their rules and now allow smartphones and tablets to be a part of daily school life. In fact, some schools now have 1-to-1 device programs, that requires students to use laptops, tablets or even phones as part of their daily work. Most schools still have rules about using cell phones, in that ringers must be turned off and phones must be put away at certain times, such as during tests or presentations. But some teachers are capitalizing on students constant need to be connected. From text reminders and notifications to school apps for turning in homework and checking into dorms, our devices are enhancing the learning experience.   Using Cell Phones in Schools is Mainstream   In private schools, the prevailing view is that cell phones are here to stay. They are not only an essential line of communication between frantically busy parents and their children but are also a tool that many educators and coaches rely on to keep students engaged. As a result, most private schools allow cell phones on their premises with the understanding that students must adhere to  specific guidelines written into their handbooks and acceptable use policy manuals. All students agree to abide by those rules both while on the school premises and also while under the schools jurisdiction when off campus. Learning Opportunities Believe it or not, smartphones and tablets are more than just social communication hubs. Some schools have even worked mobile devices into the daily curriculum, allowing students to use their phones for school work during class. Students today are using apps in robotics, presenting directly from their phones and sharing documents with teachers on the fly thanks to the implementation of mobile devices in school. There are many apps to choose from, ranging from polling and testing apps to language-learning apps and math games.  Socrative  is an app that allows for real-time polling in class, while some schools are using  Duolingo  as a summer learning opportunity to help students prepare to take on a second language. Boarding Schools and Cell Phones Every student has a cell phone at home these days, and there is no exception when home is a boarding school. For boarding school students, the cell phone helps students stay connected with their families who are miles away. Gone are the days of waiting by the payphone for calls in the common area or obtaining a landline in the dorm room. Parents can now Facetime and text with students at all hours of the day (just not during the academic day!).   The Opposing View There is still evidence of cell phones being a distraction in school if not properly managed. Small size and inaudible, high-pitched ringtones make cell phones easy to hide and use in situations that dont warrant them. It is a proven fact that adults over 30 cannot hear some of the high-pitched ringtones that teens use deliberately for that reason. Cell phones can be used to cheat, to call the wrong people and to bully classmates, especially over social media. For these reasons, some teachers and administrators want cell phones banned from school, however, studies have also shown that educating students on proper usage and providing strict guidelines with consequences for infractions will actually benefit students and prepare them for life after high school. The sensible approach is to create a set of rules and policies regarding cell phone use, educate students on best practices and ethical use, and enforce the rules that are put in place. The legend was first published in 1883 and later found by Richard Erdoes, who included it in one of his publications, American Indian Myths and Legends. Why is the human race so selfish to think we can be the hunter and not the hunted. Although giants could be a dominant presence in our lives, humans prove that they will not be over-taken. Each time I read the Tlingit legend, a new question would arise in my mind as to how this legend came to be and particularly, who wrote it? The first question I thought of was, is he the only giant on the planet? This was answered for me with the introduction of the giants son. As I read on, something seemed puzzling to me, the fact that why humans are so selfish to think they are better than giants, let alone anything else. For instance, why is it okay for humans to kill a chicken, roast it and eat it, and a giant is bad to kill humans, eat their flesh, and drink their blood(11)? Later in the story we learn that the giant also liked to roast the hearts of humans. Another puzzling question I asked myself is, if the giant was stabbed by the human and The monster screamed and Daily 2fell down dead.(12), why did the giant still speak? I know this is a legend or maybe just a fictionous story, but if the giant is also a spirit then that would be helpful when reading the legend. There are a lot of parts in this legend that are very unclear and when we ask why, who, what, where and when, we are led into yet another question to be answered. Which leads me into my next question, What makes a human better than a giant?In the Tlingit legend, a human feels threatened by a giant and kills it, why? I tend to think giants like to kill and eat humans, just as humans like to kill and eat cows, chicken and other animals. So tell me gentle reader, what is the difference? Here’s your change† is an uptake because it leads the customer to express the following statement in the second line, â€Å"Thank you! You look so great today†. This line leads the other person to engage in another statement in the conversation, which is found in the third line, â€Å"Thanks, but honestly I’m not feeling well†. This statement leads to another reaction of the other party as stated in the fourth line, â€Å"You look fine and I think you don’t have a fever either†. This statement leads the other party to throw another line, â€Å"Yes, but it’s something personal†. This line leads the customer to say, â€Å"O! I’m sorry to remind you of that†. The attendant responded in the next line, â€Å"No, it’s okay†. Then finally, the custom er closed the conversation with this line, â€Å"But honestly you look so great! Have a great day ahead!†. Clearly, there were effective lines that can be considered as uptakes because the two persons were able to involve themselves in the conversation way beyond the actual point they are supposed to perform in the scenario. Drug Store A young man, a Christian and in his late 20s after purchasing everything from a drug store started to initiate a conversation with the sales attendant who looks somewhere in her late 30s. This happened when there were only two customers left as the rest were just served and then they moved away. Customer: I haven’t seen you for a while. Did you take your vacation leave? Attendant: Yes. I just wanted to spend time with my kids. Customer: Wow. That’s great. How are they doing? Attendant: As usual, not doing great with their grades at school. They’re too preoccupied with computer games. Customer: O! I’m offering to you again my time. But this time I’ll employ some biblical principles when I’ll talk to them. Attendant: That’s a good offer, but I’ll see it first what else I can do. Customer: Just please inform me if you need some help. Attendant: Yes, I will. Thank you! The customer started in the first line, which is an uptake because it leads the attendant to respond to this statement, â€Å"I haven’t seen you for a while. Did you take your vacation leave?† This is a question statement that requires answer and so the attendant responded in this line, â€Å"Yes. I just wanted to spend time with my kids†. This statement is of interest to the customer, as depicted through this line as a response, â€Å"Wow. That’s great. How are they doing?† Here is another question that requires answer from the attendant as showcased in this line, â€Å"As usual, not doing great with their grades at school. They’re too preoccupied with computer g ames.† In this response, we can depict that there must be an existing conversation like this that had taken place before as observed from the response of the customer, â€Å"O!
